Somewhere Between a Cranked Tweed Amp and a Fuzz Box
The Way Huge Smalls Red Llama Overdrive brings back one of the most distinctive overdrive pedals ever created, delivering the touch-sensitive response, harmonic richness and amp-like character that made the original a favourite among players seeking something beyond a typical overdrive.
Originally introduced in 1992 as Way Huge's first production pedal, the Red Llama developed a loyal following thanks to its unique ability to move effortlessly between warm edge-of-breakup tones, gritty overdrive and almost fuzz-like saturation. Now housed in a compact Smalls Series enclosure, the WM23 captures the spirit and sound of the original while taking up less space on your pedalboard.
Inspired by the character of a cranked vintage tweed amplifier, the Red Llama responds dynamically to your guitar's volume control and picking attack, making it equally effective as an always-on tone enhancer or a standalone drive pedal.

Our Take
The Red Llama sits in a weird and wonderful space between an overdrive, a cranked amp and a fuzz.
At lower gain settings, it doesn't behave like a transparent overdrive. There's a thickness to the notes and a slightly ragged edge that immediately feels more "amp" than "pedal". Chords have weight, single notes push forward, and even cleanish settings add a sense of urgency to your sound.
As you turn the Drive control up, things get more interesting. Rather than simply adding more distortion, the pedal develops a chewy, harmonically rich texture that feels remarkably similar to an old tweed amplifier pushed beyond its comfort zone. The low end stays surprisingly intact, while the upper mids develop a vocal quality that makes lead lines jump out of the speaker.
Players expecting a smooth Tube Screamer-style overdrive are often surprised by the Red Llama. It has more attitude than that. It's looser, dirtier and more dynamic. Back off your picking attack and it cleans up beautifully. Dig in, and it responds with a gritty growl that almost borders on fuzz territory.
We particularly like it with Telecasters, P-90 guitars and vintage-style humbuckers, where the pedal's natural midrange character and touch sensitivity really come alive. It also stacks exceptionally well into already-breaking-up amps, creating the sort of controlled chaos that makes you keep playing long after you intended to stop.
